Summer makeup wakeup! If you’re not into a bold red lip, but sick of neutrals, typically there wouldn’t be a lot of wiggle room. Thankfully, fashion plate and beauty aficionado Lupita Nyong’o never shies away from a bold look and in her typical fashion reinvented the neutral lip at the 2018 CFDA Awards held at the Brooklyn Museum on Monday, June 4.
Nyong’o was wearing an incredible, structured Atelier Versace mini dress that needed a bold beauty look that would complement her frock — not compete with it. This task fell into the hands of makeup guru Nick Barose, who quite literally gilded the Black Panther star’s pout with a custom molten-lip that was everything.
Barose even Instagrammed his process of creating the lip for the actress, using his hand (which just so happened to be adorned in Versace gold accessories) as a palette. It would seem that the makeup veteran used a number of pigments to get the gorgeous and subtle, yet oh so sultry lip for his client. To create the lipstick, Barose layered Lancome Absolue Precious Cells Nourishing Lip Balm. Then, he lined her lips with Lancome Le Lipstique in Sheer Chocolate and applied a L’Absolu Lacquer Gloss in 286 Vertige as a base. Then with a lip brush he applied the bronze shadow from the Lancome Kiss by Gold palette at the center of the lips and blended it out with gloss on top.
Not into a major beauty cocktail? there are a number of options you could use to emulate the look. Fellow makeup artist Pat McGrath makes gold pigment that you can mix with gloss for a similar effect, or if you prefer a pre-mixed beauty prod, reach for something like L’Oreal Infallible Paints and Lips Metallic.
And if gold isn’t your style, see how Priyanka Chopra also recently wore a metallic lip while at a Chanel dinner. No matter which way you slice it, metallic lips are in.
